Day 8 Ramadhan - Step 11 Sufi Ramadhan Secrets and Gems
The following is a excerpt of a translation from the works of Shaykh Abd al-Qadīr al-Jilānī (رحمة الله عليه) by Ruslan Moore (Al-Baz Publishing).
In the original, the Shaykh begins with the hadīth regarding how tarawīh was performed during the time of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), then it talks about how and why Sayyidunā 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) established the tarawīh as we know it: Sayyiduna 'Alī (كرم الله وجهه) is reported as having said: "’Umar (رضى الله عنه) would never have taken such a serious interest in these tarawīh prayers, if it had not been for a certain saying of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), which he happened to hear from me.”
By making this statement, Sayyidunā ‘Alī (كرم الله وجهه) prompted his listeners to ask: “What is that saying O Commander of the Believers?” So he responded by telling them: “Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) once said, in my hearing: “’Around the Heavenly Throne, Allāh maintains an area called the Enclosure of Sanctity, which consists of radiant light. So many are the angels within its confines, that none but Allāh could ever add up their total number. These angels are utterly devoted to the worshipful service of Allāh, and they never take a single moment to relax. When the nights of the month of Ramadhān come around, they ask their Lord for permission to descend by turns to the earth below, where they perform the ritual prayers together with the children of 'Ādam. Whenever any member of the Community of Muhammad is touched by them, or touches them, that person will experience such blissful happiness and good fortune that he will never again feel miserable or suffer distress."
“As soon as ‘Umar (رضى الله عنه) heard me repeat these words, he exclaimed: ‘Since we are specially entitled to receive this blessing, we must be better prepared!’ He then proceeded to organise the congregational observance of the tarawīh prayers, and it was he who established the practice of performing them throughout the month of Ramadhān as a regular traditional custom.’”
As we know from another traditional report, Sayyidunā ‘Alī كرم الله وجهه went out in the first part of a certain night in the month of Ramadhān. Then, when he heard the Qur’ān being recited in the mosques, he exclaimed: “May Allāh fill the tomb of ‘Umar with light, as Allāh’s mosques are illuminated by the recitation of the Qur’ān!”
According to a somewhat differently worded version of this traditional report, Sayyidunā Alī كرم الله وجهه passed by the mosques, and he noticed that they were bright with lamps, while people were performing the tarawīh prayers, so he exclaimed: “May Allāh shine light upon the tomb of ‘Umar, as He has filled our mosques with light!”
SubhānAllāh. How beloved was the Tarawīh prayer to our Master Sayyidunā 'Alī عليه السلام, and how much blessings and rewards are reaching him, Sayyidunā 'Umar and us due to our engaging in this prayer.
